There are
a lot of myths and facts surrounding the history of Dogging
particularly in the UK. The origin of this lifestyle is intriguing,
with a lot of people curious about how it all started. Several
dogging adults from different countries across the globe have
claimed that it started in their region and that their grandparents
and even great-grandparents have enjoyed having sex outdoor. This
might not be too far from the truth, considering that the act of
swapping already took place in the 17th century, with alchemists
temporarily trading their spouses in Europe.
One of
the popular histories of dogging shares some similarities with the
swapping of wives story, illustrated in the book, The Lifestyle by
Terry Gould. The concept of swinging began in the US among the Army
Air Force pilots and their wives during the Second World War. The
high rate of mortality for pilots made pilots feel the need to take
care of all the wives as their own. Addressing such needs included
looking after the sexual needs of new widows.
History
has also showed that soldiers played a significant role in the
dogging phenomenon. The mandatory national service for men meant
that a huge number of young horny soldiers were away from their
loved ones. In a bid to satisfy their sexual desire, the men would
spy on their fellow soldiers and their girlfriends hooking up.
Fortunately for the spectators, the actors did not mind their fellow
soldiers seeing them getting it on.
Another
side of the story as to the emergence of dogging explains that act
refers to single men who pretended to be “walking the dog”. These
men were actually said to be spying on couples making out at
different locations such as cars at rural parks, superstore parking
lots, and lover's lanes. When questioned by law enforcement
officers, the spies replied that they were just walking their dogs.
Dogging
in the United Kingdom is not a new trend, with many adults admitting
to knowing about this activity and actually taking part in it for a
very long period of time. The public sex madness has transformed
from being an underground movement into a mainstream culture, with
the media playing a significant part in the popularity.
Over a
decade ago, precisely in September 2003, the BBC had a report on
this lifestyle, citing the Internet and text messaging as very
common methods of organizing meetings. In the same year, the Sunday
Herald also wrote, “The term dogging originated in the early 1970s
to describe men who spied on couples having sex outdoors – these men
would 'dog' the couples' every move and watch them.” The lifestyle
got even more attention when one of Britain’s most famous athletes,
Stan Collymore, admitted to attending several dogging meets. This
led to the tabloid frenzy that seems to have continued till date.
While
there are several angles to the history of dogging not only in the
United Kingdom but across the globe, the fact that the digital and
traditional media played a significant role in its popularity is a
fact that cannot be denied.
